Manual vs. automated CV tailoring: what actually works

Job seekers debate this in every Slack, Discord, and subreddit devoted to careers: is tailoring your CV manually still the gold standard, or has AI-assisted tailoring caught up? The honest answer is that both approaches work — but only one scales with the volume of applications a modern search actually requires.

Manual tailoring

Manual tailoring is what career coaches have taught for decades: read the JD, rewrite the CV, hand-craft the cover letter. Done well, it produces a document that reads like it was written for that job — because it was.

Pros

  • Full control over voice, structure, and emphasis.
  • Deep understanding of the role, because you had to read it slowly.
  • No fabrication risk — every bullet is yours by construction.

Cons

  • 25–40 minutes per application. Realistically, you'll do this 3–5 times before running out of energy.
  • Keyword misses are common. Human eyes skim the JD; ATS filters don't.
  • By application ten, quality drops. You start copy-pasting from earlier attempts.
